Rant on Jobs ~ non Marketing

her iv machineWhere are the Jobs?

Last Wednesday my wife was having some pain in her lower abdomen… wrenching pain that brought her to her knees.

The short of it… we called the Doctor… went to her office — she did a CT scan on my wife… gave my wife a few prescriptions, and sent her home.

Doc thought she had diverticulitis.

On the drive home the Doc called… said the CT scan was in and it’s not good… told us to head to the emergency room as my wifes appendix had ruptured — OOPs!, no diverticulitis.

Jump ahead a few days (this will be a quick post — using the hospitals computer).

Before I get started, do not take the tone of this post the wrong way. It is not a rant against other races or nationalities.

Every day I hear on the news how jobs in the United States have been outsourced to other countries… how there are no jobs in the United States… and so forth.

Having been at Presbyterian Hospital going on eight days now… let me say there are plenty of jobs here.

There must be.

In the eight days we have been at the hospital… only two of my wifes Techs, Doctor and Nurse’s have been from the United States — out of something like eighteen different people.

I truly feel like we are in the “Presbyterian International Hospital” located in some other country — we are in Plano, Texas.

Her Doctor is from India… my wifes Nurse last night was from the Ivory Coast (Africa)… and her Tech this morning was from South America somewhere — I could not understand her very well.

Her Nurse this morning was originally from Monroe, Louisiana — no communication problems there.

Well, maybe a little.

It goes both ways though — both my wife and I have a southern drawl… Texas style, so I’m sure the young Tech from the Ivory Coast had as hard a time understanding me as I did her.

I hope someone does not ask me something like, “doe she want to donate a kidney while she is here“.

Because for the most part, I do not understand much of what is being said — I’m pretty much like a knot on a log sitting there nodding my head up and down smiling like an idiot, as though I understand.

It is almost comical… they look at me all dazed and confused when I am speaking with my Texas southern drawl… and I get to return the favor when they speak, and look at them the same way.

Anyway… back to the job thing.

From what I could understand — one of the Nurses (from somewhere in South America) told me there was not enough people in the United States to fill the medical positions in the U.S., so they have to recruit outside of the country.

I think she also told me there was special programs in some countries set up where non U.S. residents train to specifically work in the U.S.

I guess this would be called “insourcing“?

It’s not outsourcing, as people are being trained to work in the U.S. — we are not sending the job out of the country, we are bringing people to the job in the U.S.

I guess we do not have people here that need the job? After all, we are only hovering around a 5.5% unemployment rate officially (some say it is closer to 8.0% if you count those who dropped off unemployment benefits and not counted in the number).

Maybe these are jobs we (those of us in the U.S.) are to good to work, so they have to bring people in to fill the positions?

It must be something along those lines… it has to be with where the unemployment rate stands.

Again… this is not a racist or anti post against any race or nationality — it is simply a rant on something I’ve been thinking about and truly do not understand.

If you have the answer… please let me know.

Time to get back to my wife before she donates a kidney (and this hospital computer blows).

I really feel bad for your wife, I hope she feels better. I agree with you, its confusing that when we have such high unemployment we give out jobs to other countries.
